Jim and Huck

Whilst traveling away from their home, Jim and Huck develop a relationship that is hard to predict early on in the story. Their similarities bring them together, and their differences don't seem to hinder their relationship at all. Huck is still young enough to be impressionable, making it easy for him to accept that Jim is an African American man, which isn't so easy to accept during this time period.

Huck's education and Jim's life experience also help develop their relationship further in this novel. Jim is a black man during a time when education wasn't allowed for African Americans, and Huck is too young to really know the hardships in life. And although they are equally superstitious (which hinders their ability to think realistically at times), they teach each other different aspects of life, encouraging mental development.
