Huck never really had parents to look after him, so he mostly had to grow up early. So when Widow Douglas took him in, he has to learn a whole new way of living. Being polite, clean, having to go to school and learn to read and write.
When Huck comes back to his new room from out all night with "the gang", Widow Douglas gives him a good look over, on account of his clothes, covered with clay and grease. She cleaned him up, prayed for him, but didn't scold him for getting all dirty or leaving the house after dark.
I think for him having to learning and get use to all the new changes with Widow Douglas he is doing well from him by himself to having to try and depend on someone to take care of him.
It can be exceptionally hard to have no one to look up to, to going to a new place and having to grow up with structure. Huck deserves the up-most respect for everything he has gone thru. Not many children his age can become mature and well-spirited as fast as he did
