Huck being mature for his age

As we have read this novel Huck has shown us his abilities. He has shown us that he is mature in ways that would make him smarter in the society of our generation.  He is very smart and understands the hardships of life at his young age. Huck smoking his pipe is a great example of him being mature. He acts like an adult and even lives on his own on an island. Huck running away also showed him becoming an adult. Some people would say that running away is mature but in this case it is not. he wanted to live on his own and he wanted the freedom and the thrill of living on his own just as every kid in society today.

Survival

Huck is struggling to survive on his own going down the Mississippi river. He could drown, get stuck, and other endless possibilities. He has to be unseen too while he is doing this. The struggle to build a fire, get clean drinking water, and eat daily is defiantly real in this situation.

Predictions

Predictions.

I predict that Huck will die by the end of this book. He is on his own and facing many dangers and is bound to die. There are many things that he could die from since this time period doesn't have very many medical advances. Disease, infection, wild animals, starvation, aloness, etc.

Huck and Tom

Huck and Tom are pretty good friends and try to do what they can in situations. Tom is a very mysterious character. He likes trouble and does what he says and does. Although Huck is fond of Tom and likes to try to do what he does. Huck and Tom are in a group that Tom made up and Tom is course the leader. Huck is a character that many can relate to and Tom is that different side of things. When Tom, Huck, and their friends are out at night they do crazy things that most young kids would do. Course Tom likes to say things that get his group thinking about what he says. Huck is a very smart boy for his age and Tom just has that
child inside him still and course he would. Tom shows Huck how to do things and to get by with things as he can. Tom is smart but then again a tough kid with a big imagination. Huck tries to follow in Toms footsteps but doesn't always succeed.

Run Aways

Huck and Jim ran away, but people think Huck is dead. If Jim is caught he would be facing running away because he is black and would be killed and he would be facing the faced the the people think he killed Huck, even though he did not. Back then not a lot of people cared about black people, and to me was just not right. He could also tell them he did not do it but no one would believe him.

Intelligent

Huck has had to nature faster then usual. He still does some very childish things though. Like putting a dead snake on Jims bed. He likes to pulls pranks and play with things. He does some vey intelligent things though as well. Like knowing how to survive in the wild. Also is very intelligent as in getting information. He went into to town dressed as a girl to talk to someone and find out information. He may be young and immature at some points but he is actually mature for his age.

Survival

Huck and jim and actually pretty good at survival. They know to find a nice place to stay. They have been hunting and fishing to find food. When him got bit by that rattle snake they kind of knew how to handle the situation. There is some things that they could have realized would be a bad idea. Such a lighting a fire at night on an island that hardly anyone goes to. So they should think their situation over better and realize the effects of what they do.

There is no doubt that Huck is very mature for his age, but is he too mature? Remember in the beginning of the book, when they were robbers, and Tom said he saw the camels and Arabs and stuff. Well Huck didn't understand that Tom was pretending. I guess that comes from his childhood, or lack there of. He had to grow up so fast, because he was all by himself that he doesn't know how to be a kid. Which is really sad actually.

Huck is Pretty Clever if you Ask Me

When Huck dresses up as a girl to figure out some new information I think he was really clever regardless the fact that he got discovered by the lady. Even though the lady found out that he was not a girl Huck did a fantastic job covering up the why with a new story on the spot. In all honesty if I would’ve been in Huck’s place I would’ve just freaked out and blabbered all the truth instead of playing it cool like Huck did. I really admire Huck for his cleverness and meekness.

You could have mercury poisioning!

In the tale of Huckleberry Finn there is a scene were are main character Huck eats bread that had quicksilver stuffed  inside of it, which quicksilver is also know as mercury and can in large doses can cause mercury poison. Mercury poison can cause memory loss, muscle weakness, mental disturbances, mood swings, and skin rashes. Sounds bad but the worst is that not only does Huck have a chance of getting mercury poison so do all of us in fact we already have a type of mercury in are systems. Other ways we get exposed to mercury is Fish and shellfish even when the fish and shellfish is cooked you can still get were small amounts of mercury. Also water, some dental fillings, and even the air mainly in urban areas has 10 to 20 nanograms of mercury in it. But mercury and mercury poisoning harms infants the most and the amount need to get mercury poison I believe varies from person to person. Mercury poison mainly harms the hands and feet the infected, while at first the rash are tame can progress to were skin needs to be removed. So us and Huck need to think before we  eat, drink, step, and inhale.

Mark Twain Switches Stereotypes

One thing that Mark Twain does in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is flip the stereotype of that time. Many people in the south thought that black people were inferior to white people, no matter how evil a white person may be. Twain switches this up through Pap. Pap is about as white as a person could be, but he is also one of the most lowly people in the south. He is a drunk, abusive father who cannot take care of his own child. He forces his son to give him money so he can go buy more alcohol. He is uneducated and greatly despises black people. Pap heard of a black man who was a professor from Ohio. He was wealthy and well educated as well as multi-lingual. He was a perfect example of an upstanding citizen, and it did not matter that he was black.

is Huck an actor?

Huck has decided to go into town but he dresses as a girl to avoid being discovered. He meets a women and tries not to give up his lie by telling a story. Huck forgot the name that he told her and almost got caught until he came up with another quick lie to cover it up.

There were two different ways to supposedly find dead bodies in the water. One of them was to fire off a cannon to make the body surface and the other was to put mercury in your bread. They put it in the water and it would float until there was a dead body under the water and it would stop so you could find it.

Jim Would Have scared the Living Rats Out of Me

A part that was really interesting to me was when Huck runs off from his home town to go to Jacksons Island. I think I wouldn’t have been as brave and unafraid as Huck was to run off into another place where it would be new and unknown. It really shows how courageous he is and how he’s able to take anything without worrying. But when Huck is at the island and he finds Jim sleeping would be a very scary thing to experience because obviously I would figure I am alone at the island but finding someone else on it would definitely startle me. Luckily Jim was someone Huck knew but if it would’ve been a stranger I think Huck would feel frightened a worried. At least, that’s how I would feel if I was in Huck’s spot.

I would love to be in Huck’s position at this time. “He ain't got no worries!” He lives on the water, fishes all the time, and has no expense. He’s his own man, no one telling him what to do, when to do it! I’m telling you what, that is the life to have.

Jim and Huck

Huck on his own is smart in terms of survival. With Jim hes all the more better, they live in the wild like its not a big deal. They do have some conflicts though so its not exactly perfect. Jim gets bit by the mate of a rattlesnake on the foot and is sick for about four days. during that Huck didn't even show in anyway that he was worried. Huck knew that everything would be okay and if not than he would still be able to carry on on his own. Huck is a good survivalist for how he handles the situation hes in. Huck and Jim make a good "team" and I dont think anything they face cant be handled.

Huck and Pap

Huck and Pap as you may know are father and son of course. Pap is a drunk and is always wanting money to go to town to get drunk. Pap tries to get money from Huck that he has earned as a reward. Huck has a great idea to give the money to Judge Thatcher to have and to use. Pap knows that Huck has done something with the money but does not know what has happened to it exactly. Huck's father is not much of a father to him. Pap doesn't know how to be there for Huck especially now. Huck has been through a lot being adopted and not having a father much in his life. His father Pap tries to harm Huck while he is drunk in the cabin in the woods. Huck has an idea to plot his own murder and to leave his father after his father takes him away from adoptive home. Huck's plan does work and everyone believes that he is dead.

Huck The Girl?

In Ch. 11 Huck Dresses like a girl.....today people would call that being a transgender. I do think its funny because he thinks he is fooling the women. The women of cores knows he is of cores a boy. I like it that he can lie on the spot, and people can believe it. So far it has been my favorite part.

Up to No Good

Even though Jim believes that many of Huck's ideas are idiotic or not exactly well thought out, I think he goes along with them anyway because Huck is so stubborn. I feel that Huck sort of talks over Jim and doesn't consider any other options. Also, I believe that he goes along with them because he feels that if he doesn't, that he might lose Huck and if I were in that situation I wouldn't want to lose my partner either. I would much rather deal with the regret of contributing to one of Huck's plans than to deal with the regret of not going along with it and losing Huck himself. I think that Jim and Huck make a good team even if they find themselves getting into trouble from time to time.

Does he think he's caught?

I think it's kind of ironic that the people searching for Huck have a theory about what might of happened. When Huck dressed as a girl and went to town and saw that lady, she said that maybe Pap killed Huck and made it look like robbers came and killed him. I thinks it's ironic because that's kind of what happened, except Pap didn't kill him. Huck thought it was a brilliant idea at first, I wonder what he was thinking when he heard her say that. You think he thinks he's caught now, or it won't be long until he does get caught? Also, why couldn't he have just dressed up as some other kid? Why a girl?

Huck

Huck is too young to be running away. I agree on why he did it, I just thing he should have waited to leave. He could have got his money then left. It would have been a little easier than faking his own death. But so far it is working out for him I just would have waited a little longer!

the runaway huckster

Huck has managed to fake his death and meet a man named Jim on Jackson Island where Huck decided to live after he disappeared. To fake his death all he did was make it look like a robber broke in from the back of the cabin and stole food and other valuables and then he broke into the shed and killed Huck himself. He killed a pig and used its blood to dirty up his jacket and left it behind. Then Huck left a trail of food leading in the opposite direction that he was planning on going to lead the search party in the wrong direction.

Bad Act Good Lies

When Huck leaves the island to go see what he can find out he is dressed like a girl and he goes to the lady's house. I found it interesting that a character like Huck would dress like a girl and take the risk of going to town to find things out about himself. It is a clever idea but he risked a lot for the little information he found out from the woman. The woman obviously catches on that hes not a girl because of the way he acted and gave him tips on how he should act in the future as a "girl". He is also a great liar when the woman catches on to him and he makes up a good fake story about why he left home. All in all in my opinion Huck is a bad actor as a girl but hes the best liar you would ever meet.

Jim and Huck

Whilst traveling away from their home, Jim and Huck develop a relationship that is hard to predict early on in the story. Their similarities bring them together, and their differences don't seem to hinder their relationship at all. Huck is still young enough to be impressionable, making it easy for him to accept that Jim is an African American man, which isn't so easy to accept during this time period.

Huck's education and Jim's life experience also help develop their relationship further in this novel. Jim is a black man during a time when education wasn't allowed for African Americans, and Huck is too young to really know the hardships in life. And although they are equally superstitious (which hinders their ability to think realistically at times), they teach each other different aspects of life, encouraging mental development.

Yee Yee

Huck and Jim finally found a good cave to sleep and hide there stuff in. They have very few worries in life. The only thing is don't get caught. They both have runaway from there owners. They have been running low on luck. After the snake got Jim, Jim has been very freaked out. Jim and Huck are about to leave Jackson Island and go down river more. After they found out about the towns people closing in on Jim. They thing he killed Huck and ran off.

Running Away

I find in very interesting in the novel how differently Huck and Jim go about running away, and how they both handle it differently. Their types of survival are also very different to each others. Huck is only running away to get to feel like he is free and independent but Jim is feared of being sold and shipped away. They both try to hide the best they can and not be found but Huck does not have to try as hard. In this time era if a slave is seen or found running away it would be a lot bigger of  a deal then it would Huck. They both share the hope of being free and independent in the end.

The Black and White Yin Yang

In society when we think of black and white we think of good and evil. Typically white is the symbol of good and black is the symbol of evil.In the book Huckleberry Finn those symbols of black and white are sort of twisted around and thrown back at us in a way that we haven't seen before. I'm talking racism and it is deep in the book Huckleberry Finn with Finn's dad being racist and saying that the negro is a leech on society even though, if you look at pap, he is a leech or more of a leech. Racism is everywhere in the book and it plagues the southern states, blacks are treated as the evil of society and that we must chain them up and make them our slaves for being so different but if you step back and look, aren't the white men in the book being the evil ones by enslaving the other race just because of skin color? Aren't they the ones associated with evil instead of the black men?
Yin and Yang

Symbolism of the raft

There is a lot of symbolism that Mark Twain wove into The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. One of which was the raft that Jim and Huck found. I think that the raft was a symbol of new beginnings and a second chance for Huck and Jim. They had both had a rough life, what with Jim being a slave and Huck growing up as more or less an orphan, but with a drunk father. The raft was an outlet from their old life to something potentially better. It was hope for them, they did not necessarily know that it would be better, but in comparison to their past life it certainly could not be much worse.

Jim

Jim... is an interesting fellow to say the least. He is fairly superstitious and believes in a lot of bad luck. For instance, "Don't look at the new moon over your left shoulder or you will have bad luck." I feel the only reason he believes this is a man looked at the new moon over his left shoulder and bragged about it. Consequently, two years later he got drunk, fell off of a tower, and died. You could say that he was just drunk, but Jim won't. Jim says that it's because he looked at the new moon. Jim is sort of street smart as well, just not book smart. He also is a tad bit too trusting.
